Construction, in Vale do Lazareto, of the infrastructures needed to install the primary treatment of wastewater from Funchal, in line with the provisions of Council Directive 91/271/EEC of 21/05/1991, the Urban Wastewater Directive (UWWD) and the national legislation in force. In view of the 20 years of operation of the current Funchal WWTP, accompanied by the expansion of the respective drainage network, the aim of the treatment plant is to increase the degree of treatment of the current plant using more advanced technologies available on the market and suitable for the treatment of domestic wastewater.
The WWTP has an installed pumping capacity of 60,000 m3 d-1, which corresponds to around three (3) times the average daily flow forecast for 2030.
The plant has a preliminary treatment level and includes the following treatment organs/processes:
- Inlet channel and hydraulically operated gate;
- Mechanical grading;
- Desanding/degreasing;
- Sieving;
- Waste removal and containerisation system (gradings, sands, oils and screenings);
- Pumping of the treated effluent to the onshore sewer with connection to the existing submarine sewer;
- Deodorisation system using activated carbon filters.
The plant also has the following spaces and compartments in the administrative building:
- Entrance hall with reception area for visitors and meeting room;
- Electrical switchboard compartment;
- Transformer station;
- Command and control room for all procedural operations;
- Storage rooms;
- Sanitary facilities and changing rooms;
- Laboratory;
- Workshop;
- Emergency generator room.
