The Development Plan for Montargil reservoir aimed to define the model of occupation of its intervention area (water plan and protection zone which corresponds to a range of 500 m measured from the level of fullstorage) in order to regulated, protect, develop and match a set of activities related to leisure, recreation and tourism, while preserving the environmental balance and the primary use of this reservoir (irrigation).
The Montargil reservoir was created by a dam built in the river Sor, near Montargil, dominating a watershed of 1200 km2, in the Tejo basin.
The total capacity of the reservoir is 164 hm3, and a maximum length of 33 km. At level of full storage the flooded area is 1 500 ha.
