Diversion of Chikapa and Luó Rivers

The work is located in Lunda Norte in Angola and is intended to divert the Chikapa River and its tributary Luó from the right bank to uncover the kimberlite that lies on the riverbed.

It consists of a diversion channel on the right bank of the river, dimensioned for a flood peak flow of 1700 m3/s, with the following characteristics:

  • Development: 2700 m;
  • Longitudinal slope: 0.00152;
  • Depth: 10 m;
  • Surface width: 20 m;
  • Smaller bed with 3 m high bounded by 2 berms with 13.5 m wide each;
  • Slope inclination: 1V/2H;
  • Covering: 0.30 m thick Reno-type mattresses;
  • Excavation volume: 2x106 m3;
  • Rockfill volume in the channel covering: 0.1x106 m3.

The maximum heights of the excavation slopes reach values of 21 m on the right bank.

On the left bank, the channel is delimited by 3 embankment dams with the following characteristics:

  • Total development: 1700 m;
  • Type: zoned embankment dams with central clay core;
  • Maximum height above foundation: 14 m;
  • Crest width: 10 m;
  • Volume of landfills: 0.45x106 m3.
