EDM is planning to reinforce electricity production in Mozambique with the addition of the Mavuzi II Hydroelectric Power Plant (HPP) Project. The main objective for the development of the HPP is to increase by 37 MW the production and supply of electricity generated from renewable sources in the region. The HPP Project is located in central Mozambique on the Revue River in Manica Province, approximately 60 km by road from the provincial capital of Chimoio. The Project site is downstream of existing Mavuzi I HPP. The HPP is expected to have an installed capacity of 37 MW and annual average production of 100 GWh.
The forthcoming challenges include selection of the dam site, type of dam, optimization of the dam height, reservoir volume, location of the powerhouse and installed capacity, if the project is to be technically feasible and financially as well as socio environmentally viable. Sensitive treatment of all aspects of project development is required in order to design a project which will be embraced by the diverse stakeholders and whose implementation will provide significant tangible benefits to central Mozambique.
