NR 114 - Improvement and Strengthening of D. Luís Bridge in Santarém

D. Luís Bridge has a total extension of 1213 meters, including meetings, being 1178 meters in metal structure. The bridge is formed by 9 spans, Over the Railway, there is a simply supported span with 24 meters, and on the left bank there is a viaduct with 570 meters of extension.

The bridge tray, made in reinforced concrete, supports the metallic structure at the risers of the main beams, which are reinforced with high strength steel bars.

The improvement and strengthening of the bridge consists in carrying out the following works:

• Consolidation of masonry pillars with cement grout injection;
• Treatment of the pillars foundations, with gravel piles;
• Repairing the observed deterioration on the bridge tray and concrete rods;
• Reinforcement of metallic profiles;
• Removal and replacement of the pre-stressing bars anchors when it appears to exist corrosion;
• Cleaning and painting of concrete surfaces;
• Painting the bridge and viaduct metallic elements;
• Provision and settlement of new dilatation joints on the viaduct, as well as the improvement and settlement of the original joints of the bridge;
• Milling and placement of asphalt carpet on the road surface;
• Replacement of lamps, armatures and electric cables;
• Improvement of curbs, sidewalks and guard rails.
