Quadrupling of the Cintura Line and Modernization of the Northern Line

The Project involves the execution of interventions over a total length of about 15.5 kilometres, and includes:

  • The quadrupling of the Cintura Line, between the Stations of Roma/Areeiro and Braço de Prata;
  • The modernization of the Northern Line between the Braço de Prata and Sacavém stations, including the complete reformulation of the track diagram of the Oriente station, with the insertion of three more tracks;
  • The construction of new stations in Chelas/Olaias and in Braço de Prata and of the new Halt of Marvila, suitable for the new rail services, and that ensure better conditions of user safety, comfort and access. The Chelas/Olaias station will be provided with a hub that connects with the Olaias metro station;
  • The construction of six new railway bridges and similar structures (three bridges, one viaduct and two tunnels);
  • The complete replacement of the overhead line systems in the intervened sections of the Cintura Line and the Northern Line;
  • The construction of the infrastructures to support the Signalling and Telecommunications component;

These interventions will increase supply on the Cintura, Northern and Sintra Lines, particularly in suburban trains, but also in the regional and long-distance ones.

The implementation of these investments will create conditions for the implementation of new High-Speed Services between Lisboa-Oriente and Porto-Campanhã.

The project provides for the following speeds (minimum values):

  • Cintura Line: 100 km/h;
  • Northern Line (Braço de Prata – Oriente): 160 km/h;
  • Northern Line (Oriente – Moscavide): 100Km/h;
  • New Braço de Prata Line – Oriente (Lines 1, 2 and 3): 160 km/h;
  • Xabregas Concordance: 45 km/h.
