Freixo Waste Water Treatment Plant

Integrated in Porto city Oriental Sanitation subsystem, serving, besides Torto river basin in Gondomar, the parishes of Campanhã, Bonfim, St. Ildefonso, Sé and part of S. Nicolau, the FREIXO WWTP is composed of 3 treatment lines:

  • The liquid line, where the treatment of the affluent waste water is carried out, consists of a Preliminary Treatment which includes screening, removal of sand and grease; A Primary treatment aimed at removing solids in suspension; A secondary treatment to eliminate compounds of an organic nature and equipped with a biological reactor; Recirculation of mixed liquor, primary and secondary decanters and Recirculation of sludge to the biological reactor; A Tertiary treatment aimed at the disinfection of waste water by UV radiation.
  • The sludge line, with thickening of the raw sludge; Biological stabilisation of the sludge; Dehydration of the sludge; Chemical stabilisation and storage 
  • Deodorisation line

  • Maximum Peak Flow Rate: 840 L/s
  • Biochemical demand for O: 211 100 kg/day
  • Chemical demand for O: 222 470 kg/day
  • Suspended solids: 14 460 kg/day
  • Total Kjedhal Nitrogen: 2 550 kg/day
  • Total phosphorus: 500 kg/day
