Marão Tunnel design is part of the European Road 82 – E82, which starts in Porto (in Matosinhos) and extends the motorway A4 until Bragança and Spain.
The section for the overall completion of the Motorway A4 has a total length of 26 km, of which 5667 m correspond to Marão Tunnel, composed by two parallel galleries with a total length of 11 335 m of tunnel, crossing Serra do Marão in the West / East direction and making this the longest road tunnel in the Iberian Peninsula.
The first phase of the excavation works of Marão Tunnel had its beginning in July 2009 and was definitely suspended in July 2011, a time where the two portals were almost completed and around 7340 m of the total of the two galleries excavated.
